For Educators
Cape Peirce Marine Science and Yup'ik
Culture Camp:
Togiak Refuge works in cooperation with the Lower Kuskokwim School District, Southwest Region School District, Native Village of Goodnews Bay Traditional Village Council, and Traditional Council of Togiak to sponsor this camp. Students from the villages of Goodnews Bay and Togiak are selected to attend, and elders from these villages are invited as well.
The camp participants learn about marine mammal and seabird biology by helping field biologists conduct monitoring and behavioral studies of walruses, harbor and spotted seals, black-legged kittiwakes and common murres. Students, elders, and Togiak Refuge staff share knowledge of Yup'ik uses of seabirds, marine mammals, and plants, and traditional conservation and survival skills.
This camp has been taking place since 1995 at Cape Peirce, a walrus and seal haulout and seabird nesting site. Students have the unique opportunity to view firsthand the subjects they're studying, as well as the occasional hoary marmot, red fox, or caribou.
