Western Hemishpere Shorebird Reserve Network:

short-billed dowitcher. Copyright Don DesJardin. The Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN) is a network of sites providing important shorebird wintering, migrating, and breeding habitat. The Network is a collaboration of private and governmental organizations working together to recognize the importance of shorebird habitats throughout the Western Hemisphere. A WHSRN designation is non-regulatory, and supporting a WHSRN site is a voluntary action. The Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network is run by a non-profit organization in Massachusetts called the Manomet Observatory. Staff at Togiak National Wildlife Refuge assisted in the designation of Nushagak Bay as a site in the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network.

In September 2000, Nushagak Bay was designated as a Regional Shorebird Reserve by unanimous approval of the WHSRN Council. Nushagak Bay became the 41st site in the network and the 3rd in Alaska.

For more information regarding the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network, contact the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, or visit the WHSRN website.
