Access
Togiak National Wildlife Refuge is located in southwest Alaska, in a part of the state known as the "bush." There are no roads connecting Togiak Refuge, or the nearby "bush" communities, with the rest of the state. The eastern boundary of the Togiak Refuge is about 350 miles southwest of Anchorage.
The refuge is roadless, and there are no established trails, campgrounds, or handicapped accessible facilities. Access is by air or water (during the ice-free months) only. Primary access to the Togiak Refuge is by chartered aircraft. Access to the Cape Peirce wildlife viewing area is limited; please see our other recreation page for more information on Cape Peirce.
Dillingham is the hub for many of the air taxis that have permits to operate within Togiak Refuge, with some permitted air taxis in the cities of Bethel and King Salmon. There is daily air service to Dillingham, Bethel, and King Salmon from Anchorage. Barges supply these communities during the summer months; there is no passenger service to southwest Alaska via water.
There are opportunities for both professionally guided and independently guided recreation on Togiak National Wildlife Refuge. Visit our "fishing", "hunting", or "other recreation" pages for more information on the types of activities available.
